- Does your marriage seem "stuck in a rut?"
- Do you feel like you and your partner are drifting apart?
Then, read on...
Marriages, like people, are dynamic. By that I mean they don’t remain the same over time.
According to Dr. Ed Wheat, in a marriage people are either moving closer together or becoming more distant and isolated. He believes that every choice we make moves us one direction or the other.
Stages of Marriage
Additionally, all marriages seem to move through stages. The psychologist Paul Tournier said, “I’ve been married six times – all to the same woman.” Tournier explained that he never got divorced, but rather his marriage transitioned from one stage to another.
How many stages a marriage passes through and what each stage involves may depend on who you ask. However, in The 7 Stages of Marriage (2007), Harrar and DeMaria identify the stages as:
•Passion •Realization •Rebellion •Cooperation •Reunion •Explosion
All marriages experience change and transition. Successfully navigating each stage, making decisions that move you closer and completing the developmental tasks that stage presents you with keeps the marriage alive and growing.
However you describe it, the essential point is that a marriage is a process. It evolves. It helps to know what to expect at the various stages. Otherwise, normal transitions may be misinterpreted as loss of love or reasons to divorce.
Marriage enrichment is about learning, making good decisions and growing the relationship in healthy ways. Marriage enrichment is about making a good marriage better. Marriage enrichment is being intentional rather than simply “letting nature take its course.”
Marriage Enrichment Counseling
Marriage enrichment counseling attempts to help a couple understand what stage of marriage they are in, what developmental tasks may be confronting them and what the possibilities are to move in a healthy direction. It may involve gaining new perspectives, adopting new attitudes, making important decisions and learning new skills. If you're ready to move your marriage to the next level, maybe it's time to take a positive step for learning and growth.
